Teenagers & Children

Teenage anxiety is my specialism.  Anxious Children

I work with teenagers suffering from anxiety and children with issues such as sleep and bedwetting.

What I love about children and teenagers is their ability to learn quickly and make changes almost instantly.

With statistics showing that:-

  • 50% of lifetime mental illness, excluding dementia, starts by the age of 14 and 75% by the time people are in their mid 20’s.
  • Since mid 1980s depression and anxiety have risen for boys and girls aged 15 and 16, as have behavioural problems such as lying, stealing and disobedience.

Let alone the statistics for suicide and self harm!

Extremely worried and exasperated by an increasingly anxious 10 year old,  I was recommended  to Helen Johnstone by a friend having already first explored many other avenues – counsellors, psychiatrists, kinesiologists, GPs.  Straight away I found Helen’s gentle and sensitive approach to my daughter a great relief.  Helen was meticulous in learning the background to my daughter so she could piece together a full picture of the child she is.  Helen worked slowly and carefully with my daughter over a period of months to gain her full trust (I don’t believe that she had felt this with any other therapists we had previously visited).  Between appointments, Helen continued to communicate with my daughter directly via email feeding back encouragement and praise for her successes.  Helen even visited my daughter in our home to better understand the environment and have a more complete picture of her situation.  Helen has remained in contact to hear updates of her progress and continues to show a genuine interest.  I have seen my daughter progress from being  extremely fearful, unable to sleep alone, unable to be alone in a room, unable to shut doors to embracing life, with a renewed confidence and a sense of independence.  This has been achieved through a variety of different techniques practiced by Helen – hypnotherapy, Rapid Eye Movement Therapy and counselling.  Throughout this whole process Helen has been a huge support to me and was a wonderful counsellor for which I am very grateful.  Review from a Mother of a 10 year old girl.

By becoming aware of the issue and learning new way of coping strategies, a young person becomes skilled and positive and can rid themselves of old ways of thinking and behaving really quickly and effectively.

With young people under 18, I work with the parents too, sometimes in a separate session, sometimes on the phone.  In this way we together can support and guide to achieve the best possible results.

Do you live too far away to see me in person?

I offer Skype and Email Therapy for those that are unable to attend my practice due to distance or time constraint.  You begin by completing some initial forms and questionnaire and once returned we agree a time for our first Skype Call.  If you prefer to speak on the phone, that is absolutely fine.   After this call, I will make a treatment plan to address your needs which will be emailed to you, with goal setting, tasking, support documentation and information.  In addition, you will have access to your own Hub and Portal Pages where you can download a personalised MP3 that supports the email first session.  After an agreed time period, we set up another Skype or telephone conversation that will determine the next email and MP3 content.
